Weaving business project

GEF considers the development of a small business to generate a sustainable income through employment creation within the community especially for women and youth is one of the key issues in fostering and sustainable development in the community.

Proposed project title:

Startup of a small weaving business, especially for impoverished women and youth

Project location:

Hsegyi village, Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division

General background information

Hsegyi village is located in Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division with an estimated population of over 190 families. Majority of the families are agricultural farmers and seasonal labourers for their livelihood.  The area is one of the dry zone areas solely dependent on rain water.  Due to frequent droughts, the ground level water is scarce for agricultural activities. This leads to the villagers having no work and income to feed their families or to send their children to schools. Children become street children and child laborers.  In order to alleviate poverty among these families, there is an urgent need to implement an income-generating programme for the survival target group in that area.
